Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 9 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!

We experienced a "bluegrass takeover" on this week's program, as we welcomed our guests, western PA-based bluegrass duo Black Sheep Bluegrass, into our studio! Christian James and Valerie Wood discussed their duo and how it came together, their music, creative processes and more - and they brought their instruments along and did several songs for us live! We also threw the spotlight to several other area bluegrass and folk artists along the way, and debuted a new song from Harrisburg's Seldom Said No! We updated "Local Music News," and with the recent passing of Backyard Rockers founding member and harmonica player David "Harmonica Dave" Baird, we broke out a 2013 song by the Backyard Rockers featuring Dave's harmonica work for this week's "Local Music Flashback!" And we stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song from Morgantown, West Virginia favorites The Hillbilly Gypsies (since renamed The Hillbilly Biscuits)! (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 070923.)

In Local Music News...

The lineup has been announced for next month’s annual “Pickin’ for Wishes” Bluegrass Festival, presented by the Make A Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The event will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 18 and 19, at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Association. The music starts on Friday evening with Tree performing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; admission that evening is free. Saturday’s music starts at 12 noon, with the bands Centerfire Bluegrass, Hickory Bottom Band, Hillbilly Biscuits and Mama Corn performing two sets each in rotation throughout the day. There will also be food and craft vendors, a basket auction and raffles, and children’s activities. Ticket prices for Saturday are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate; children under 12 will be admitted free with accompanying adult. Free rough camping will be available, and the event is B.Y.O.B. with glass bottles being discouraged.

And the area music scene is mourning the passing of David Baird late last month. Known to many as “Harmonica Dave,” Dave was an enthusiastic harmonica player and was a founding member of Altoona-based acoustic trio the Backyard Rockers. Dave frequently attended jam nights around the area, and donated his talents to numerous benefits over the years.

That's a look at “Local Music News.” Bands and artists with news items to report on the program may email their information to homegrownrocker@gmail.com.
