Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 11 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Better late than never! Due to some special programming commemorating the 4th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, the “Backyard Rocker” was delayed for the better part of an hour. But once the show did begin, we delivered as promised with two hours of maximum local and regional music.

It was a busy two hours, with several themes surfacing through the program. First, with the Steelers back in action, we opened the show with two songs celebrating the Black and Gold. Second, since it was the 4th anniversary of 9-11, we played several special songs written about that tragic day and about America in general. Third, we spoke with Bill Betts, a spokesman for the 3rd annual “Rock The House” Benefit concert, which takes place next Saturday, Sept. 17, at Greenhouse Park near Johnstown. With proceeds benefiting the IMAC Foundation (which works to make alternative medicines and medical procedures affordable to uninsured and low-income people), the show will feature performances from The Clarks, Pivot, Yum, Flap Jack’n Jill, Love Stomp, The Marauders and more. (For more information about the concert, visit the website www.imacjohnstown.org.)

And along the way, we updated Local Music News, and featured numerous new songs from Rachel Allen, Rhyne McCormick, Sodajerk, A Second More Than Forever, Formaldehyde Joker and Second Offense.

Here is this week’s playlist:

In Local Music News…

Q94’s “Backyard Rocker” first wants to commend an area musician for going above and beyond the call of duty last weekend to try to help out the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Banditos bassist Bill Nusom spearheaded an effort to transport supplies from this region down to the affected areas in the South, in the process gathering skids containing over 17,000 bottles of water, first aid kits, plus donations from central PA and Bill’s native western New York. Bill attempted to find a suitable staging area near the disaster area to transport the goods to, but was advised by authorities to instead take the goods to Cleveland to load aboard a freight truck to be shipped to the disaster area. Hats off to Bill for stepping forward and donating his time and energy to help out others in need.

A number of events and activities are taking place to help out with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Over $2,500 towards hurricane relief was raised last Wednesday evening at Heritage Plaza in downtown Altoona, as the Blair County Community Action Agency staged a benefit concert to conclude its Wednesday evening Summer Concert Series. The evening saw performances from Big Mac’n Fries, featuring members of Flight 19, Prime Time Band, Square One, Pastime Band and others; plus Band Of Gold, the Servello Family, Dennie Huber, Elaini Arthur, Megan Ritchey and others. Altoona mayor Tom Martin even made a cameo appearance to commend everyone who supported the cause.

Several more benefit concerts are coming together. Nest Saturday evening, there will be a Red Cross benefit show in Huntingdon County. The show will take place at the Shade Gap Picnic Grounds, and begins at 7 PM. The show will feature the bands Eyes Of Anguish, Second Offense, Forgotten Symphony and Ajaxx. Donation at the gate will be $3, with all monies going to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Donations of non-perishable goods, water, blankets, personal hygiene items and more will also be accepted.

Next Sunday, Sept. 18, the “Rock The Guard” benefit will take place at the 876th Engineer Battalion Armory on Airport Road in Johnstown. The show, which will show support for soldiers of the 876th currently deployed to Iraq and in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, will begin at 1 PM, and feature performances from Slapdash, Hi-Tyde, John Denver Flight School and Shades Of June. Donation is $2. Refreshments will be available, as the Family Support Groups will be selling goods with profits going to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Seating is limited, and no alcohol, containers or coolers are permitted on the premises.

Other additional benefit concerts are coming together in both the Altoona and Johnstown areas; we’ll have more information about them on the “Backyard Rocker” as details become available.
