Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 11 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Wow! That’s all I can say after the seventh installment of the “Backyard Rocker” Acoustic Jam Special. Big thanks to all our guests who helped make this one of the best Acoustic Jam Specials so far: Jerry’s Fault, Wood-n-Strings; and new local roots group Mama Corn, making their official central PA debut! As I heard the various musicians rehearsing songs before the show, I knew we were in for a good time. Then, all three acoustic entities rocked ‘the house that rock built’ with rousing performances; before joining forces for some incredible rock, folk and bluegrass jam fireworks during the show’s last half hour! Extra kudos to Mama Corn’s John Stevens, who provided the sound board, mixed and produced the performances, making everybody sound great! This show was a blast!

Besides all the live acoustic fireworks, we also aired new songs from Justin Mack and the Victory In Heaven Band, updated Local Music News, and reviewed the self-titled debut album by Holis in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” (The review can be viewed in the “Backyard Rocker” section of the Message Board area on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com.)

In Local Music News…

Get Closer To The Music has announced the date and location for their fourth annual Music Festival. This year’s event, which is co-sponsored by the Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission, will take place on Saturday, April 28, at the East Juniata Civic Center, 1608 North 5th Avenue in the Juniata section of Altoona. The doors will open at 11 AM. Again, the Music Festival will provide an opportunity for area children and families to explore the world of instruments and music. There will be an instrument “petting zoo” where children can touch and play instruments. There will also be instructors on hand. There will also be games, prizes, food and refreshments, plus performances throughout the day from Spirit Lost, Hair Force One, Felix & the Hurricanes, and a special guest appearance from Nashville recording artist Ricky Lee. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

A benefit concert to help out a local cancer patient will take place next month in Gallitzin. The show, which benefits Lisa (Sherry) Baum, will take place on Saturday, April 21st, at Dignan’s Firehouse, 400 Main Street in Gallitzin. The show will begin at 7 PM, and will feature music from the bands Ruff Rodes, Acoustic Bliss, Acalasia, Beyond Reason and Tie Down. Donation at the door will be $5. For more information about the benefit, call (814) 886-5200.

Two members of former area hard rockers Stept On have reunited in a new project. Jim Bagrosky and Adam Zimmer, who played drums and bass respectively in Stept On, have formed the new band My Turning Point. Jim sings and plays guitar, while Adam plays bass and sings. Other band members include lead guitarist Dalton McDonald and drummer John Placer. My Turning Point is releasing their debut CD, Seclusion Serves Me Well, this week, and will perform a CD-release show this coming Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day, at the Osceola Hotel in Osceola Mills.

Lewistown’s Rhyne McCormick is forming a new band in addition to his solo venture. Called Last Chance, the new group features Rhyne, his wife, Jen, Dave Arentz, Mike Quinn and Adam Becker. Last Chance will perform their first show in late May at the Harrisburg Artsfest; according to Rhyne, he hopes to bring the band to the Altoona area later this year.
