Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 4 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!

This week it was back to the mailboxes to get caught up on new recordings from area bands and artists that had arrived in recent days and weeks! We introduced a lot of new songs on the radio airwaves this week, including numbers from western PA's The Semi-Supervillains, Clearfield's Brandon Giuffre, Windber's Dave Nichols, Dubois' Lone Crow Rebellion, Pittsburgh's Roc MD, Johnstown's Blood Union, State College's Casey Becker, and...Tainted Turnip (the latest incarnation of Altoona-based musical chameleon Tom Brunner)! In addition, we debuted a new song by Huntingdon native Doug Forshey (now living in Nashville); his song "Walter Main's Circus Train" (an ode to the tragic circus train wreck that occurred near Tyrone in May, 1893) won first place in this year's Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest (PHSC). Doug wins a cash prize and gets to perform his song on stage during the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival later this month! We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1989 song by Altoona's Wanted from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and stepped "Across State Lines" to introduce music from Tampa, Florida's Kamenar! (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 060423.)

In Local Music News...

The schedule has been set for the second annual Activate Altoona Music and Art Festival, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15, at People’s Natural Gas Field. The event will feature at least 30 art vendors, plus food and drink for purchase from the Altoona Curve, and live bands both days. Friday’s entertainment will include Bone Jacked doing a Tom Petty tribute set, Drive By Magic Show with a Killers tribute set, and Walkney to close the evening. Saturday’s entertainment kicks off with The Pines doing a Beatles set, followed by The Snipped with a John Mellencamp tribute, JuJu Bone, The PennSoulvanians, Sweet Desire, Bad Luck Lover Boys doing tributes to Fall Out Boy and Green Day, and Alice In Chains tribute Deny Your Maker to close the night. Admission is $10 per day or $15 for both days;

The Gabe Stillman Band recently announced that drummer Ray Hangen is stepping away from the group to pursue other opportunities. A search for Ray’s replacement is under way.

A new band project featuring former members of The Jukehouse Bombers has come together. The Blazing Suns features former Jukehouse Bombers drummer Logan Yonkoske and keyboardist Gabe Riva, along with Steve Frye, previously with Lonesome Road. The new group reportedly has a lot of original song material already written.

And we have sad news to report with the recent passing of longtime Altoona area musician John Alamprese " “Johnny Al” "on May 17 at age 76. Johnny was a gifted singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who worked and performed on area stages, and took his musical craft to New York, Los Angeles, Florida and more. He released a 1991 cassette album with his studio group, Johnny Al, Kevin Bruce & the L.A. (Little Altoona) Street Band; that album, “For Adults Only,” was recorded in Hollywood. Johnny used to be a frequent flyer during the popular Wednesday jam nights at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg during the late 1980s and early 90s. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” express our heartfelt sympathies to Johnny’s family, friends and musical colleagues.

That's a look at “Local Music News.” Bands and artists with news items to report on the program may email their information to homegrownrocker@gmail.com.
