Well said, slackin.

I've always been disappointed Alice Cooper. He's a surprisingly lousy DJ.

The local venues really need to wake up. We have a pretty decent community of musicians here, but every single one of those musicians has a horror story about a local venue. Many of the owners have screwed enough people that no one wants to play there any more. And very few venues have put any kind ...

I think it's important to determine what the "right gig" is for your band. While it is important to "get your name out there" I think that playing the right gigs is better for the longevity of the band. Personally, I think that having a 3rd party do the booking would avoid most o...

What currently passes for "country" on the radio is really just pop/rock with a fiddle, so trimming it down seems about right.

Good soundmen will listen to their monitors; walk around the stage and actually put their ears where the performers' ears are. Conversely, if you really want to make your soundman's job easier, take several nights and run sound for another band, or help out someone who is. Mile in his shoes kinda th...

One of the major drawbacks to a processor that I've encountered is that they can cover too wide a range of tone, which doesn't translate well in a live setting. Even if you had all of the gear that a processor models, you couldn't use it live, certainly not on a single PA channel. Sounds like you're...

One great way to learn a song inside and out is to de-construct it and flip around. I've learned, and come to really like, a lot of songs by playing a completely different version from the original. I'll listen to the recording to get the chords, then shut if off and make it my own. That really help...

As far as playing what's best for the audience I don't think they really care if you're playing through an amp, a processor or a damn modified microwave oven. As long as the music is what they like and the band sounds good to them that's all they're typically concerned with. That's my point, exactly.

Ah, but that nightmare gets reduced to nearly nothing if you take floor wedges and amps out of the equation. I don't think that "do what works for you" is the right approach. I think "do what works for the audience" followed by "do what works for the band" come first. W...

Sure, you need a proper PA, but you need that no matter what. As far as tubes, ehhhh. I very seldom hear a satisfactory explanation of the "tube sound" from guitarists. They often use terms like "warmer" or "grittier", but I don't hear a lot of quantitative descriptions...

I'm not even a guitarist or bassist, but I do have to remark that even after re-reading the entire thread and considering all points made therein, this comment remains as one of the most upper-echelon posts I've read in terms of snarkiness and complete douchebaggery. Sure, nobody uses amps anymore....

Bassist_25 touched on a good point about room fill, but I hold a very different opinion. As a bassist, guitarist, drummer, (insert your performance here) it is NOT your job to fill the room or provide coverage; that is what a PA is for. Instrument amps, while clearly quite loud, are not designed to ...

I'd love to go with IEMs. With direct instruments, especially electronic drums, the monitor mix will never really change. So you could keep a small mixer and a mult-box, and just plug and play virtually anywhere. You would never require any kind of monitors, the whole band would only need about 10 i...

Amps are for suckers. Quiet stage = better mix. It's 2015. The Analog Digital War is over, and analog lost. You can cry all you want about "your sound" and the "feel" of your rig, but that just shows weakness in your ability. You are up on stage to entertain; most people don't gi...

I'm curious as to why they decided to walk. OK, it's clearly prima dona-ish to get insulted over a time slot at a benefit. I don't know who they were, but I'm certain they didn't have anyplace better to be. So they loaded the truck, drove to the gig, stayed out late enough to kill their chances of h...

Yeah, simplicity is the key. I think that the biggest problem with processors or multi effects units is that they cover too much ground, sonically speaking. Just because your processor can model 100 amps and 200 pedals doesn't mean that you should. If you had 100 amps, you surely wouldn't take them ...

Here Bassist and I agree. While Marshall has some darn good high-gain offerings, they are and have been more like muscle cars, as opposed to the European sport car performance of amps like Soldano or Mesa.

As cool as I think the iPad would be, I can't see using it onstage. It's probably the best idea for a backup ever. But you couldn't expect it to handle regular stage use. Consider connectivity. If the processor you go with doesn't have an XLR out, you may want to get a DI box as well. I like being a...

What I've found with Line 6 is that they offer a greater sonic spectrum than necessary - to the point where it is difficult to control. When I first got it, I had trouble getting things to sound right, particularly with higher gain sounds. There is a depth of control that gets out of hand. For each ...

I (and my band) have been playing processor only for several years now. We call it Zero Stage Volume. The idea is to be as universally mixable as possible. I think it's the best thing ever and I will never carry an amp again. I use a POD X3 Live from Line 6. It is an amp modeler and FX processor wit...

FloodCity makes a good point. It would be interesting to hear other performers isolated like this. Imagine hearing JUST Lemmys vocals. It would sound like my drunk neighbor arguing with his shovel. I know I don't like hearing myself sing lead, but I do alright singing with someone.
