Paul, the EMG sets come with everything needed for assembly, and if you wanted to save a few bucks, I'll throw them in for you.
Don't be afraid of the unknown.
Anyway, I always liked DiMarzio's stuff. They seem more versatile than alot of Seymour Duncans, but there are alot of differing opinions about tone and feel. Seymour makes some fine pups also don't get me wrong.
I always thought it would be cool if there was a shop that has pickups on display that you could wire up and play before buying, but hey, that'll never happen.
The next obvious choice is buy used and then go from there.
It can be a long process, especially when you are winging it.
I had a Jackson V one time that I know I went through 8 or 10 different pups before I found the 'tone'
I'm not a bass player so I'm really in no place to tell you either way really.
I'm sure that no matter what it will be a welcomed improvement.
Best of luck with your choice. You may have to go through a few different sets to find the one that compliments the natural tone the best.
Then again you might get something on the first try that totally blows you away.

Unfortunately they don't make a 5-string jazz set. I discovered the same thing not to long ago. Good luck with the search.bassist_25 wrote:Hmm, I'm only finding soapbars in EMGs active 5-string line. Surely they make a non-standard Jazz 5 string pickup.

My Hohner V bass has EMG Selects in it, but they appear to be standard size J-bass pickups....does your Squier have standard Jazz-size p'ups or are they wider? Bartolinis are certainly a good option, as they are featured on a lot of non-standard type five-string basses (i.e. wide necks). You may also want to consider some of the Carvin pickups as well.
Let this be a lesson to you: get back to the four-string:)
