What is the 1st Concert You Saw?

I have seen hundreds of big name acts in concert over the years but the first concert I ever saw had such a major impact on me to becoming a musician. I was 8 years old and my mother took my brother and me to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown in 1964 to see Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. There were several acts on the bill that night, most of which I don't remember, including a girl vocal group, Bill Deal & The Rondells, and the headlining act was Herman's Hermits, who I thought were great back then. Right before Herman's Hermits came onstage, I sneaked away from my seat and went under the rope to stand at the very front of the stage. It was at that moment that I decided as an 8 year old boy that I had to be in a band someday and the rest is history. It was such a memorable experience and night that had a major impact on me and I will never forget it.

Been to a ton of punk shows in my teens, but my first BIG Concert was The Allman Bros at Post Gazette (then Starlake ampitheater) in Pittsburgh, in 1995. I was wearing a glow in the dark Misfits shirt LOL!!!
I've seen them 5 times since.

I saw my first local and national concerts in 1980. The local one was Harrisburg's Full Moon, performing at the Penn State Altoona Slep Center, circa March/April 1980. I actually have that concert on tape, I brought a cassette recorder in and taped the whole thing!

A few months later, my first national concert was Ozzy Osbourne and Motorhead at Johnstown's Cambria County War Memorial. That show was so loud my ears rang for a week afterward! This show featured two legendary line-ups of both bands; this was the Lemmy/Fast Eddie/Philthy edition of Motorhead, and the Blizzard of Oz line-up of Ozzy's band, featuring the late Randy Rhoads. I was scarred for life!

My first real concert was The Carpenters at the Johnstown War Memorial. A comedy duo, Skyles and Henderson opened for them. They were regulars on the Johnny Carson Show. Karen Carpenter's voice was awesome man, smooth as silk. "Close to you" gave me chills.

My very first concert was Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at the MCI Center in 98. I started at the top, and it's been downhill ever since.

That Ozzy/Motorhead show was my first concert also.

Tommy Aldridge from Black Oak Arkansas, The Pat Travers Band, and other bands played drums and Rudy Sarzo from Quiet Riot played bass with Ozzy on that tour lineup and they sounded great even though bassist Bob Daisley from Rainbow and other bands and drummer Lee Kerslake from Uriah Heep played on the Blizzard Of Oz album.

Many local bands but the first concert with national acts were at the U. of Scranton, first concert of 1972. John Hartford opened, The Earl Scruggs Review with Vassar Clemens was second and the Byrds were the headliner. For the oncore, Hartford joined Vasser on fiddle and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds played banjo with Earl Scruggs and this whole group jammed up a hootenanny. The encored with the "Ballad of Jed Clampett" with everyone singing every word to every verse.

I said to myself, I might like this college stuff. Next concert was Steve Miller Band just a week or so later.

Kiss at the War Memorial. Crazy Nights tour. We waited in line for over ten hours. My ears were ringing for days.

Poison and Slaughter at the War Memorial. Flesh and Blood Tour 1991. A guy oustide the War Memorial was telling my mother she was going to hell for taking an 8 year old to a concert.

Bon Jovi and Skid Row at Johnstown's Point Stadium in the early 80's. My friend's mother took me and my friend. I bought a Bon Jovi shirt that said, "We're back kicking ass". When I got home that night...my mother was pissed that I bought a shirt with a curse word on it. Little did she know the impact that one show would have on me.

I think it was Blink 182 at the K2 sports and music festival somewhere around state college, probably around 1997ish.

its possible I saw a local band at a festival or carnival or something before then and can't remember.

The first national act I saw, I believe, was White Zombie at Starlake. They were cool, as always, I went for the openers: Rev. Horton Heat, Babes In Toyland, and fucking KYUSS. I heard later that show was the last Kyuss show, they broke up on the road.

That show helped me realize clubs are the better venue, more intimate, more interaction, more volume. I couldn't begin to list everyone I've seen in clubs.

My first national concert was Flotsam & Jetsam, Fear Factory, Korn and Megadeth at Starlake.

The Byrds in 1966 at the "Steel Pier" in Atlantic city. I was 13 years old and was so naive that I hadn't ever seen a male with long hair before except on TV. Then the "Byrds" walked out on a stage like the average high school gym with hair down to their shoulders and big Fender Dual Showmans turned up tp "10". My parents freaked and headed for the bomb shelters. I just stood there and shook. Ain't never been the same since then, in fact last month, I even sprang 230 bucks for a "Jangle Box". Your roots never leave you.

I was 7, and my birthday present was going to See Alice Cooper open for The Scorpions. I was the only 7 year old there rocking out to every lyric from Alice's set. I loved it.

holy crap jp that was my first concert too. i think i was 11 then. that was an awesome show. ozzy and motorhead that is.

first concert was Confederate Railroad, Mark Chestnut, with George Jones at the Jaffa.
first rock concert was back in dec. of 06 at Bryce Jordan...Soil, Shinedown, and Godsmack. All the bands were good, but going to a rock concert was not what I thought it was going to be like.

Billy Idol back in the mid 80's City Island in Harrisburg. Then as my life got better I had front row for Stevie Ray Vaughn with Double Trouble , who opened for dare I say it Huey Lewis and the news. However I was there to see SRV with my best friends in HS and we were way into Hendrix in highschool.. I will never forget Stevie tearing it up on Voodoo Chile (slight return)

First and still the best concert I've seen was Days of the New at the Crowbar. My brother and I were under age, so the one and only Todd Lane took us. I can't thank him enough!
