Burbank, CA -"Death Magnetic" , the current album from best-selling heavy metal band Metallica, has scanned more than one million units and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America just six weeks after its release on September 12th by Warner Bros. Records.

The band's ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic" debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 Album chart at No. 1, Metallica's fifth consecutive album to do so, making them the only band in chart history to have five albums debut at No. 1. It breaks the band's tie with the Beatles, U2, and the Dave Matthews Band, all of whom have four No. 1 album debuts. Death Magnetic remained at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks and to date has scanned over 1.2 Million albums.

In addition to debuting at Number 1 atop Billboard's Rock, Alternative, Hard, and Internet album charts in the U.S., the album racked up No. 1 chart positions in 31 foreign countries, including the U.K., Canada, and Australia, and Top 3 chart slots in seven more, including Japan.

Metallica's first proper tour of the United States and Canada in four years is currently in full swing with support bands Down, The Sword, Lamb of God, and Machine Head. Critics attending the October 21st opening night in Glendale, AZ, were ecstatic with Spin.com declaring that if the first show was " was any indication, rock's not dead. Check its pulse." The Arizona Republic noted that " Metallica burst out of the starting gate with a ferocious two-hour show that left no doubt that the band is still the monster of American heavy metal."

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, Metallica has become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 100 million albums worldwide and playing to millions of fans the world over. They have garnered numerous awards and accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards.

What do you think? Does the album deserve it's awesome success?

I'd LOVE to hear it live without being hugely 'over produced'

I believe it does. Fans were waiting anxiously for this, especially after St. Anger was such a bust. It proves Metallica fans will stick by them and give them a chance.

I know I was waiting for it...alot of my friends had them written off, but I wasn't giving up hope. And they delievered. My best friend, also a die hard fan, seems like he's forgotten how they started. He said it sounded too much like that "speed metal crap." Ummm...dude...do you ever listen to Kill Em All anymore?

I for one am glad they gave themselves the much needed shot in the arm that was long in coming. This gives a whole new generation of fans a chance to experience for the first time what had us true fans smashin' and thrashing in 1983.

I think it deserves it's success. I think they've finally distilled/extracted the essentials from what they were trying to find in the '90's and integrated that with a rediscovered sense of what made them great in the '80's. Death Magnetic has great synergy in that respect and the band sounds like they have direction again. I love it.

I'm going to go see them on the 15th of Jan. I'm pretty sure it's going to kick ass. In a beautifully cyclical way things have come around. I'm taking my 13 year old daughter, who is the same age as I was when I first saw them. I hope it affects her the same way it did to me. I only wish she could have seen Cliff.

Those were my thoughts exactly when I heard it for the first time. The overall tone of the album has a lot of elements of Load and ReLoad. It has the aggression of St. Anger. Then it contains the really cool arrangements that marked their first releases. It's not Sgt. Peppers or anything, but it's a great release, IMHO.

I haven't heard much of this record, but if people are gobbling up loud guitar music, it's a win.

I was skeptical until I heard it. I've been re-converted.
... and then the wheel fell off.

AC/DC did 780,000 units at WalMart this week. Could it be a hard-rock resurgence?------->JMS

Both the Metallica record and the AC/DC record are the best I've heard from these bands in quite a while....

I am thankful that these records exist...
