Dave Murray Signature Strat

Post by metalchurch »

Finally!!
Nice to see these guys getting the respect they deserve!
One of my fav players for sure so I'm very happy to see this.

It's times like this that I wish I were righthanded. This fuggin sucks for me! So....as usual I'll have to build my own.
This is an awesome thing!
First Adrian gets a sig Jackson, which is way cool as well, and now Dave.

How many models of stratocaster does this make now? 50? 60?

And what is this 21-fret business? I thought they grew out of that long ago (except for their vintage models, of course).

Well it's 21 frets because it's based on Dave's 1957 Strat and they wanted to remain true to that.

Aren't the rest of the current Strats 21 frets also? I think they are.

Yes there are a shit load of re hashed, re named same old shit put out by Fender. They're all the same fuckin guitar with different pickups and different colors. That's all.
Play one and you've played them all.

I do have to give them credit for being able to flourish all these years with minimal changes in their lineup. I guess like the old adage goes: if it aint broke dont fix it.

Also I really have to give Fender credit for not changing, because thats why people made what are now known as Super Strats and there might not have been a Charvel, Kramer, Jackson.
So, thanks Leo!!

I'm also extremely happy that since the FMIC buyout of Jackson/Charvel the names and models have not slipped in quality or design.
Some things have changed which I'm not happy about, but all in all it's better than not having them around I guess.

Now I know that Dave Mustaine had a deal set-up to buy Jackson and they went behind his back at the last moment and sold to Fender/FMIC for more money, so either way the company would have stayed afloat.

Would they be ok under Dave's supervision? I'd like to believe so.

I got my parts list all filled out, so income tax time i'll be ordering everything I need to build my own DM Strat.
I havent wanted a guitar as bad as this for a long time, and I really cannot wait to build it.
It wont be authenic and it wont be worth much, but it's as close as I'll ever get and I plan on keeping it for along time.
Next after that is a Gilmour Strat.
I think I'm going to build that to the specs of it during the 1983 era: Charvel Strat headstock, Kahler trem    Did ya think any less? Hahaha!
I have two DiMarzio FS-1 single coils already, and some other odds and ends.

Are you telling me he routed a genuine 1957 for humbuckers?

Everyone's got mixed feelings on this one I see. Not my favorite but not bad. A floyd and a single humbucker looks good on a strat, nice and clean. This one is pretty busy. I think if the single coil was left out it would look a little better, that single in the middle of the buckers just looks a little out of place.

What parts do you plan on using?

It is a fender so you're starting to head in the right direction metalchurch.

Yes, but he did that in 1978 when they weren't as collectible. Alot of guys did that kind of stuff back then. Same as guys did with old cars, what was only $500 back then is now $50,000.

Hahaha yeah thanks Tony.
I totaly agree with you on that single coil, so I'm planning on leaving it out, or lowering it down....But I'll probably leave it out.
I'm also going with 1 volume knob (as usual)
While I want to remain true to the original, I also want to have something that I'll be comfortable playing.
What good is it to have something that you dont feel good playing?

That being said, the volume knob location on a Strat has always been a draw back for me, because my hand always hits it.
So I'm planning on moving it down to where the first tone knob would be (the middle knob location.)
I might go with tone knob just so it doesn't look too stark and bare without it.
Either a no-load tone pot, or a blend pot for the bridge so I can turn it into a single coil, or not even wire it up and leave it for looks only.
Definitely going to have a 22 jumbo frets, and a compound radius.....

I have my parts list done and I know where to find everything I need so I'm good to go. I'll definitely let you guys know as I'm building it.

Here I am hijacking my own thread

Weren't as collectable? Don't you remember them going for over $5000 back in 1978? :D

Cars=iron=rust
Guitars=wood=aging

Guitar pickup modding wasn't nearly as prevalent in 1978 as it was even 5 years later. The only custom pickup that was commercially available at the time was the Dimarzio Super-Distortion. Duncan & other pickup makers were just getting started.

Yeah there wasnt much other than a DiMarzio Super D, and thats the pup set he put in actually.

You're right, $5000 was alot of money and the old guitars were collectible back then, but the market wasnt as educated as it is now. Thats why I said they werent as collectible because the market was limited to those in the know.

Did you guys catch the Steve Harris sig bass?
From what I've read, it will also make production in '09.
I always liked this Bass alot as well.

"And here (in the bottom photo), for completion’s sake, is a shot of the old Steve Harris IM bass guitar. All we know of the newbie is that it too will be finished in metallic blue and it’s likely to offer a Badass bridge and a brace of Seymour Duncan Quarterpounders."
