what exactly is the point of the whole "i need 18 4x12's in the middle of the desert to record this track but i only need one mic" thing?
i'm George Lynch. i need a wall of sound. in the middle of the desert. why? why not?
he's an amazing player, but i never got guys that do this type of thing. i got 20 bucks on it sounding no different than going direct into a line6 pod with a nice touch of verb on it in a studio...
of course... this way is much more rock and roll, i guess...

We once had an opening band in which the guitarist decided to stack up not one Marshall cabinet, not two Marshall cabinets, not three Marshall cabinets, but four Marshall cabinets despite the fact that we were running full FOH support. Keep in mind that this was the opening band. He had two 4x12s, a 2x12, a 2x12 combo, and then whatever stand-alone head he had in the rig. It was funny to watch the engineer stick on mic on one of the cabs.
I felt like I was transported back into the 80s where it was cool to have a wall of cabs behind you, regardless of whether more than one was actually loaded with drivers. I thought that I was going to have to dress up like Kip Winger for our set just so I wouldn't look lame after that.

but come on man, admit it. if aguilar would have you as an endorsee, you'd have about 20 4x10's behind you... if you had roadies... maybe... right?

Hmmm....
Would the bad assness of having a wall of Aguilars behind me supercede the fact that it would be utterly pretentious and douchefull to do just to play a gig at Davey's in Hastings?
Actually, I'd do it if I got an endrosement from Phil Jones. Then I'd stack up a wall behind me of their Suitcase combo amps.

Lots and lots of bands put up dummy cabs back then. It was just what you did, if you could. I can't say with any authority, but I remember Van Halen had a backdrop with hundreds of speakers painted on it. Next thing you know, everybody has stacks of real amps and cabs. It doesn't take long to realize how unrealistic that is to actually use, so they just left them unplugged. Sometimes, they didn't even have speakers in, to save on weight. I remember someone telling me that Great White used regular tube combo amps backstage, and the wall of amps were props-only.
We used to set up empty speaker cabs back in the day, to make it look better than it was. I never knew why bigger was better, but I didn't argue it.--->JMS

drummers do it with kicks too, I've heard stories of setting up Aerosmith and putting his kit together, and then looking down behind it and he is running a double kick pedal to one drum, the other is for the look of a big double kit.

I was told a few months ago that when Iron Maiden is playing live they don't even turn Janick Gers up in the mix except when it's time to solo. Some of the members didn't even want him in the band when Adrian came back but Nicko threatened to quit if they didn't keep him,so they kept him.
That's just fucked up.

I do know that Janick is probably the sloppiest out of the 3, but his stage presence makes up for it cause he's the only guitarist that runs around.Plastered Bastards wrote:I was told a few months ago that when Iron Maiden is playing live they don't even turn Janick Gers up in the mix except when it's time to solo. He messes up alot of his solos on tour, and there's a youtube video from "Rock in Rio" where he is doing his solo and drops his pick, but hey that stuff happens though.
I dont hate him, I would just rather have it be Dave and Adrian.
I really enjoyed the "No Prayer for the Dying", and "Fear of the Dark" albums, though.
I think Dave Murray makes that band what it is....(Bruce, and Steve as well)
They still sound great live, but unfortunately I haven't seen them yet, and I'm only going by their live footage.
It reminds me of the "Live After Death" video actually cause they have their old Powerslave-era stage set-up.
Up the Irons!

yea, i have death on the road dvd, and yes... janick is about sloppy as hell. i don't think any of his solos (he maybe had 2 of them, haha) sounded good. but come on, the guy throws his guitars around like it's no big thing. he actually throws them around... like pitches them in the air. 30 or 40 feet (maybe not that high) and catches the damn things!! it's kinda impressive... maybe he should work on his playing instead of on his guitar tossing...

I knew when I started to read this thread that FB would tell the story of the Marshall cab man, lol. Didn't he have like one, crappy distortion switch pedal to go with his gargantuan set up?
That was at the Beirhaus in Lewistown, too. Not the biggest place around by any stretch. Funny shit.

That's what she said.
Lynch is like my number one guitarist. His right hand technique is impeccable, and whether it's an ESP or a Tele, you can still tell it's him. He has a tone and style that very few dare to copy...with the exception of Dokken's new guitarist. I swear they sat this guy in front of one of those hypno-wheels chanting "you are Lynch, you are Lynch..." a total clone. Don knows what it takes to make Dokken awesome, but can't put up with George himself..LOL.
While he's my fave git player, he's a total jerk. Went to a concert back in '91 and waited outside the stage door for two hours. Don, Mick, & Jeff all patiently signed stuff and talked with everyone. When George came out, he pushed thru everyone and went straight to the limo. My signed ticket stub sits incomplete in my scrapbook.....
