Post by felix'apprentice »

Just curious - whats your favorite songs to play? Whether you play bass, guitar, drums, keys, etc etc.

I play guitar and one of my favorites is simple man by skynyrd. I also love to play Happy Together by Simple Plan (remake of the beatles) Also like Every Rose has its Thorns, Copperhead Road, Burning Bright, Wish you were here, Time of Your Life and the Night Pat Murphy Died.

Lets see what ya all got! Bring on the songs! 8)

I like playing my own songs best, but here are some covers:

War Pigs-- Black Sabbath. When I get to shout, "Oh Lord, Yeah!" and then the band nails that next instrumental section, it's raw power. The crowd starts pumping fists and banging their heads... Oh, yeah. It's GOOD to play in a rock and roll band!

He Stopped Loving Her Today-- George Jones. It makes old people cry, then shake your hand.

Slow blues-- It doesn't matter which one, as long as it's in a key I have a harmonica for. Gimme a slow blues in the key of A, and I'll tear my heart out for you.

Desert Plains-- Judas Priest. I always loved that beat. You can really flex your singing chops on it, too, challenging without being unsingable by anyone other than Rob Halford, like so many of his songs are.

Sex Machine-- James Brown. You have to dance at least a little to sing it, you have to move, plus chicks dig it A LOT. I've seen some wild stuff while that song is being played.

This Little Light Of Mine-- Ralph Stanley. It's bouncy and happy, one of bluegrass's many moods. The mandolin hits on the downbeat, and propels it, and it's like a ride on a fast merry-go-round, you know where it's going but it's still pretty cool.

Lager & Ale-- Kim Mitchell. I never actually played this song, or sang lead. My buddy Mark Morningstar sang the lead, I sort of sang a tenor harmony in lieu of the layered harmonies on the album. This song was awesome because we played it strictly for ourselves. Most people who saw us had no clue who Kim Mitchell was, nor had they ever heard his music. We just loved the song. It's about getting really drunk and "falling in love" with a stripper. Kim was a guitarist from Canada who also had a song called, "Go For A Soda" that still gets played occasionally. --->JMS

oh yeah, JMS....how true...the riffs before the line "Politicians hide themselves away..." are some of rock and roll's finest...thanks for the reminder :)

Slayer - Postmortem, Angel of Death, Metal Storm/Face the Slayer, Blood Red

Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Phantom of the Opera, 2 minutes to midnight
Judas Priest, Metal Meltdown, Victim of Changes

Black Sabbath - Killing yourself to live...well all of them.

THere's too many to list really, I cant narrow it down.

Desert Plains and Beyond the Realms are some kick ass songs, it's nice to see them make the list.

Favorite songs we cover in the side effects:

Bikeage Lyrics
Artist(Band):Descendents

Running out of time again
Where did you go wrong this time?
When your problems overwhelm you
Go get drunk it's party time
Take a quaalude, relax your mind
Relax your body tool
Run from problems but
You'll never get away
No one loves you, and you
Wonder why?
Sitting there with your
Mouth full of beer
Your eyes are glazed, your face is red
Who's gonna pick you up
and use you for tonight?
And when you're on the streets
With a needle in your arm
Selling your body for another fix
Who's gonna pick you up and take
You home with them tonight? Not me!
Running out of breath again you're an
Old maid, but you're only 15
You're losing your little girl's charm
Cry all night but you'll never get it back
Don't be afraid, it's not too late
Save yourself, I need you here
Wearing off, wearing out
I can't think about this cause it
makes me sick
Sitting there with your
Mouth full of beer
Your eyes are glazed, your face is red
Who's gonna pick you up
and use you for tonight?
And when you're on the streets
With a needle in your arm
Selling your body for another fix
Who's gonna pick you up and take
You home with them tonight? Not me!

-AND- The 30 second masterpiece:

Mdc
Slow, Stupid And Hungry lyrics

Legalizing marijuana
Maybe they should
Maybe they oughtta

Slow, Stupid, and Hungry!

Decriminalizing pot
Let's go for it, why not

Slow, Stupid, and Hungry!

Let's get high, yes siree
I want you to be like me

Slow, Stupid, and Hungry!

Yes.... My spine twinged and curled, face contorted so much that, in comparison,
Quasimoto would look like a supermodel.

Oh...and the fave tunes...

"Attention Please"-Caroline's Spine
"Just Like Heaven"-Cure
"Suck My Kiss"-RCHP
"99 Red Balloons"-Nina

all stand out that are in a night's work. Too many to count in the grande scheme.

on bass:

i like to play john the fisherman by primus... but wynona's big brown beaver is a close number 2.

that and most anything. i'll play whatever. i'm not choosy. i could probably play anything but bluegrass... not cuz i hate bluegrass, but because i think i lack a little theory knowledge to come up with applicable bass lines.

on drums:

mob goes wild by clutch. mmm... groove-elicious....

guitar:

nothing. playing the guitar takes an ego that i'm not comfortable with  no offense intended except to guitarists  seriously, i'm joking!

Nah, there's not that much theory involved, though there might be if you were real flowery. Mostly it's root-V stuff and variations on root-V... you can ride back and forth on two notes per chord, and still be considered awesome at it. It's about timing and precision, hitting the note dead-on the beat even when somebody in the band gets off time. The bass in bluegrass takes the place of the kick drum in a rock band, it's the foundation everything is laid on. The bass locks in with the mandolin (the snare drum in a rock band), and form the actual beat of the bluegrass song. Simple, but haaarrrdd. Simple if you have naturally good timing on bass. You could do it.--->JMS

It's funny that you mention that song. My old lead singer always wanted to remake that one into a modern rock song. He said he though a lot could be done with it. He couldn't talk me into it, lol. We settled on "The Gambler" instead.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

I don't have any favorite songs to play. I just enjoy playing in general. Really played all kinds of different styles and every style has something to offer, so it's hard to say what songs are my favorite....probably our original stuff because it's ours.

Depends on what instrument I'm playin'. If I'm playin" bass it would most likely be "Southbound" by the Allman Bros. If I'm playin' the 6-string electric it would prolly be some SRV or Clapton, and it seems like everytime I pick up the acoustic I always end up playin' "A Pirate Looks At 40" by Jimmy Buffet , "Shanty Song" by Jonathan Edwards or something by Jim Croce.
