Looking for a new guitar

I am in the market for a new guitar and would like some feed back on what you guys think are the best one. At this point, I want either a fender strat or a parker. There are others I was looking at, like ltd M series, and in the same time to track down my beloved ibanez rg450dx I bought from working two jobs in highschool...

Any suggestions as to what I could look for ??

personally im fender all the way. right now i have mim strat that i recently had a floyd rose installed on. the thing played great without the floyd rose and now it just rips. i love it, not only does it play amazing, it looks great too. ive played some of the schecter (might have spelled that wrong) guitars at the music emporium and i like them a lot too. they have a nice action and pretty good sound to them. but i'd say fender strat and then mod it to your likings! good luck!

what's your budget like? i'm really digging the schecter tempests. coil tap, dual humbuckers, and they come in white. sound like a les paul with the humbuckers, sound like a strat when you tap them. not to mention, they play well and are probably worth more than schecter asks for them. these days the best bang for your buck guitars are schecters.

Go to a Dick Shack Posse show and talk to Jeff. He builds sweet guitars custom, and it's local. Or go to the Reed brothers benefit at 30 something on May 24th. We'll be giving one away that Jeff generously donated!!!

I am going to be going over to Rainbow music tomorrow to look at a couple. I looked at schecters at Music emporium the other day, they do look nice. My dad brought up a samick as well. Hopefully he still has the selection he had last time ...

Since i had my Custom shop Carvin built 2 years ago my PRS,Gibsons,and Strats are collecting dust.Sometimes i don't believe it myself.

Hey Scott...

That is a nicely built instrument for sure. I admit I was surprised at how much you spent. You got your $$$ worth and then some.
Those EMG's turned set loose the caged beast

There's so many guitars to choose from and they all look the same until you start narrowing it down to what options you want, the type of music you play, feel, etc...
Different woods, pickups, and bridge type all affect tone and give a guitar it's voice.
Some guitars are better suited for certain types of music, but none are really exclusive to one style.
Except for a lap steel in a Metal band. But that is a cool name.

As Lonewolf said in another thread about an amp, "You want to buy something based on tone not what it looks like" (more or less)

I'd make a short list of 5 guitars and narow it down from there.
Ask around and see who owns one, and go check it out in person.
Fuck the Harmony Central reviews and other's opinions (to an extent) check it out for yourself if possible.
You can get it down to one or two guitars real quick.

You'll get so much good help on here, cause out of this small group, we've collectively played just about everything there is.

I played a couple of earnie ball music mans. They are nice. I like the carvin ultra v also, good choice, scott.

I been eying a schecter stiletto up all day. The more I look at it the more I want it. I will have to try one out tomorrow.

Mahogany body and ebony fingerboard. It is a beautiful looking guitar.

You could always try to find another RG450DX as well. If you really liked it then you know what to expect and you should treat yourself to another.

if they're in your way, you could store them all at my house. cheap.

I didn't just like the rg450dx - I loved it. They don't make them anymore. The closest I found to it was a rg prestige. That is nice guitar also.

... and inlays. why do you think vintage strats sound so good? clay dot inlays. why do gibsons sound so good? MOP man. it's amazing the effect on tone a nice style inlay will do. see the schecter tempests? they have like a split polygon. i bet it adds alot of shimmering highs and sustain. no inlays? i bet it'd be a pretty dark sounding guitar. there was a group at MIT that studied the effect that inlays have over an instrument, and they determined that wood, pickups, bridges, and the nut have a much less noticeable effect on tone as the inlay does. just food for thought...

I know they've been out of production for a while, but they can still be found.
Did you see the 770 re-issues? They are nice guitars as well.

Never heard about inlays affecting tone, are you serious about that? No offense but I find that very hard to believe. I'm assuming that you were joking.

Sounds like you've got a brand narrowed down - Schecter. That's a good start.

Speaking from experience, I'd say take as much time as possible to try out as many types as you can. I know, it looks bad ass and it seems to be calling you, but you gotta look past the "shiny new toy" and really sit down and get to know it. If anything at all bothers you in the least, no matter how much you think you want it, I'd say put it back. Things you think you can look past in time become HUGE annoyances later, and it ends up getting sold or traded. (some people actually enjoy that though, and that's great).
You may end up finding Schecters don't suit you at all...and the search begins again. I can't tell you how many times in my past I bought something thinking this was it only to see it leave later on down the road because I found something that annoyed me.

These days, I spend at least a half hour if not an hour trying one out. Sometimes it only lasts a few seconds. If a volume knob so much as touches my pinky, it goes right back....no matter how bad ass it looks. I can be more selective now.

Thank you all for the feedback. There are some good points here. As for the pinky thing; I kinda agree with that. It can be an annoyance.
