Musicians supporting other musicians

One topic that I thought would be interesting is a discussion about musicians supporting other musicians. I know around Johnstown, I have a group of musician friends. My circle of friend ranges from orchestra/jazz/band-directors to rock n roll players. I find that the musicians that I know are very supportive of each other.

A perception people might have is that bands are in total competition with each. Sure there is some competition but in the long run I find that musicians are supportive of each other and are all in this together. Bands have a common goal of promoting live music.

I personally are grateful for the friends that have helped us in the past. I have called players to sub in the past. Even if they aren't able to play, they give me the phone numbers of other people who may work. I have borrowed equipment last minute too.

Although it is hard for bands to see other bands, I see support in Johnstown where other musicians will stop in and listen to a show.

Additionally, if we are unable to play an event for whatever reason, I always try to recommend other bands. I would rather see another band play rather than having someone book a dj. If a band plays an event, people are more likely to want a band at the next event. And that opportunity might be yours. It helps people get the mentality that having live music is the norm. This mentality helps everyone!

All in all, I could list more positive stories rather than negative stories. From my perspective, I am glad to see that We are all in this together.

I get a massive amount of support from other musicians. Its fuggin crazy man. Think they got more faith in me than I do.

Ya ... the support from other musicians is crazy! Someone is always willing to show me something new or teach me something. Its really humbling that such great musicians would take time and help me out, its greatly appreciated.

Can't forget the support i get from friends too, they really push me to keep playing. If it weren't for people showing me they are willing to invest time in me, i probably would have quit. big thanks!

When i first started playing in the mid 60's, it seemed like there was a lot
more competition betweens bands, but over the years, the attitudes have
changed for the most part. There are still the occasional bands that think
they're Gods gift to music, but overall, i find most are friendly and supportive. We have an amazing array of talent in this area, and you can
always learn something. It's hard to get out and see other bands if you
play a lot, but i enjoy the times i can. When i was young, my dad used to listen to all types of music, and i credit him with my love for music, and
the desire to play. I also learned over the years to try and play each gig as if it was your last, because you never know ;P

I dig getting opportunities to see other bands and there is a strong brotherhood vibe out there, IMO. If we're not playing, it's cool to catch other acts ... it's a perfect night out. We get a lot of support from fellow musicians, which we appreciate. It's cool to hang out with friends in either case. We dig getting the chance to jam with other musicians, whether it's a multi-band show or just calling someone up on stage. Also, there have been times over the years where we'd be looking for a player and four or five cats would step up to sub while we searched, never having to cancel a gig. This scene is awesome and the talent pool is growing fast. r:>)

Like Rob I like to get out and see other bands, and in this area MOST of the musicians are VERY COOL , there are a few folks who believe they are rockstars and they are actually just idiots, I would like to say you know who you are but the funny thing is you prob. do not. Flight 19, Bad Daze, Kitty whip are a few really cool local bands I enjoy seeing and there are a few I want to see that I haven't yet had the chance, Sunset Strip for one, I hear that they are a very cool version of 80's metal and I would dig that. I now play in a mostly cover band and the union there is not as strong as it was when I was in an all original act, the original acts REALLY ban together in a brotherhood that is amazing

I always always always refer someone else if we can't do the gig, in fact, I usually give people numerous bands to choose from based on what type of music they want. We try to go see other bands as much as we can but it's hard when you are playing too. I also refer people to rockpage a lot so they can read about the bands themselves and then contact you from here. This is a very good source for clubs.

I have been in the local music scene for a very long time and have become friends with many musicians over the years by playing with them in bands, jamming, sitting in, doing fill in gigs, or just knowing each other. There is much mutual support and respect between musicians in this region and that is a good thing. I have always gone out to see other bands whether I know them or not. If I do not know them, I make sure I introduce myself and many times that has resulted good friendships. I appreciate when other musicians come out and see my band as well. In addition, I have gotten to know quite a few people through Rockpage.

Personally, I try to get out as much as I can and check out bands when we are off. I saw Bad Daze and the Hurricanes this past weekend.

I stopped in to Pellies and saw you guys about 2 weeks back I believe. I didn't have a chance to say hello though..we had to bail a little early. Awesome QOTSA cover though.

RIGHT ON!!

I've seen tremendous support from other musicians and the general public for all the projects I've been involved with over the years including recently, G211, Shark Bite, Big Jim & Bad Daze Rob. Plus projects in the past. And it's always fun to sit in with Felix, Blues Moon, etc.

Due to my regular work and occasional playing, I haven't had as much time as I used to to get out & see others, but I do when I can. In fact, I'll be out there tonight checking out a band I haven't seen before.

Live music is alive and well! Give yourselves a hand!

Well, we got none last night. We were "suppose" to play/open with a band called "Impulse". I think they are from the State College area. It was at a "local", to us, festival to help support the revamping of the Embassy Theater in Mifflin Co. Everything was set up, per norm, between the 2 bands, so we thought..... We get there and they say, "You can't use any of our stuff." (As per "openers" do. We all have done it. Plus we have our own PA and gear. If that's how they wanted it. They should have told us up front. 2/3 weeks ago when it was set up. We did speak to them, the band, prior too.) Not even there PA!!! ... They were actually getting "paid", we weren't. The event promoter put us on the bill because they thought it would help draw for them and for the event. Because we were local to the event. Well, needless to say we got screwed. But the funny thing was....... 90% of the people left!!!!!

So, if you ever consider working with a band called IMPULSE, DON'T!!!! They are NOT musician friendly!!!

How bout this.... Working on doin an opening gig with Kitty Whip... I think that's pretty positive, huh?

I'm not a big "boaster" about things, especially if it's about me or a project I'm in. But I hate when people get screwed. And I voice my opinion.

This is pretty much what we are doing putting on the shows at Around The Corner in Johnstown. Trying to get more band unity. We are bringing in bands from all over the state and some from out of state.Its really a good time and Im sure that Sanchez and some others can vouch for that. We have a great time there and everybody supports everyone else. We do however have a certain HATER out there that is against us having shows at this venue. Its all good tho, envious I guess! Its whatever tho, this guy dosent even play in a band. Never has played in a band if I can recall. Anyways if there are any metal bands out there that are interested in what we have going on up here feel free to get ahold of me on here or contact The Defining Hour via myspace at myspace.com/thedefininghour. All are welcome and its great to meet new people and have a good time. Oh and FUCK THE NAYSAYERS! All they care about is making a profit off the BANDS hard work.
