Drums!!!
Drums!!!
Holy crap. I got a used '80s pearl drumset awhile back for 50 bucks thinking I had gotten a deal (which I guess I did), but wow. I'm looking at drumheads--both top and bottom-- for the full kit and cymbals and I honestly think this is going to break the bank! The heads alone for the kick, three toms, and snare alone are going to cost around 200 bucks! Crazy! I had no idea drums were so expensive and the worst part of this is, drum heads and cymbals are subject to wear and tear and they are gonna get broken over the next couple years and it'll be time to do it all over again. My purpose for doing this was to have a studio kit/practice kit that people could use for practice or that I could use to work on my drum mic'ing techniques... but after finding this out, maybe the shells will just collect dust in my garage.

Seriously though, its money well spent. Heads are a large part of your drum sound. You can make a crappy set sound great with good heads and proper tuning techniques (all things being good with bearing edges and roundness of the drum shells).
Cymbals....that's a whole other story. You get what you pay for. Try ebay for used cymbals...there are deals to be had if you know what you are looking for.

It would be sweet if we musicians didn't have upkeep costs on our gear. That's why I've been known to soak bass strings in denatured alcohol.
I just decided to retube the power section of my head, which has 12 6L6s.

Wow Thanks for the heads up. I just bought a new house and we are putting in a studio. I will need a set of drums for practice. If you hear of a good used set let me know thanks Debbie The Red Arrowhicksjd9 wrote:Holy crap. I have a friend that works at Drums On Sale in Hagerstown, MD. They do a lot of online sales. They are usually cheaper than musicians friend. You would get free shipping considering the amount of heads you are buying.
You may want to consider buying some combo packs to save some money. If you shoot me a PM I can give you a heads up on what might suit your needs depending on the sound you are going for.

Many local music stores like Ace's, Music Emporium and Ford Music Store can match or beat Musicians Friend's prices if you just ask. The bigger (more expensive) the item, the better a local store can do in terms of matching.
Let them know the Musicians Friend's price and ask for a match. I know personally, Ford's can often beat their price on large items.

Re: Drums!!!
If it makes you feel any better, I havent replaced the heads on my rack toms in almost two years. they probably need it but I still get compliments every now and again on their soundhicksjd9 wrote:Holy crap. We've had a couple guys come who are new to drumming, and they went home inspired to try out some new things ! You don't need to know anything about drums / drumming to stop by. The whole idea of drum night is to share ideas, stories etc.. We are all there to learn.hicksjd9 wrote:Man,

We talk about the simplest of things like how we hold the sticks to grooves and fills. We seldom know what direction it might take, unless we have a planned topic or clinician.
So watch for the next one and join in.
