Mark King is an amazing little white dude with as much soul as a 300lb southern baptist choir woman! It ain't easy to get a signature bass from Alembic, Status AND JayDee! He's one of the greats.
.

All kinetic, no potential.

I have World Machine on vinyl, and I pulled it out the other week to give it a listen. Good stuff! They always reminded me of a more progressive Toto. Alembics always were a little too pristine sounding for my tastes (I actually do prefer more hifi sounding basses), but Mark King definitely has a great tone. He was originally a drummer and picked up on slapping by watching bass players in the music store he worked at.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

Definitely a very cool band and Mark King is a terrific bass player. I was just watching some of their live videos a few weeks ago and he was doing some jazzy, funky slapping bass solos. Normally, a little slapping can go a long way and be overdone; but, Mark King is absolutely great at it. Check out this live video.
