Jonny Lang and his band put on an incredible show last night (Thursday) at the State Theatre.

I had heard Jonny was good live, and went into this show with some expectations. Jonny and his band far exceeded them! Jonny tore it up both on voice and guitar, and his bandmates were stellar as well; especially his rhythm section. The drummer, Barry Alexander, kept things busy with lots of little jazz-like nuances. The show turned into a spirited soul- and funk-fest, with heated jams and improvisation along the way. Jonny and band did the expected crowd-pleaser, "Lie to Me," with Jonny starting it off solo acoustic before slowly escalating it into a full band workout. But the clincher for me was their version of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," which lasted over ten minutes; when you thought the song was winding down, the group sent it off on another fresh direction, with backing singer Jason Eskridge doing an acappella display before the whole group finished it with a fury.

For the encore, Jonny and band went into the funky "I Am," before each member of Jonny's band did a solo workout, culminating in a hot jam session finish!

I'll post a few pictures later. But for me, this was a pleasant surprise, and one of the sleeper concerts of the year. Excellent show! And good to see the decent attendance, considering that Miley Cyrus was playing across town at the Bryce!

Last night must have been 'Colton needs to split into 3 people so he can see all the kickass shows' night.

I mean come on, I went to see Devil Makes Three in pittsburg at club cafe, jonny lang was in state, kenny wayne shepherd was at rams head live in baltimore....

man, wish i coulda seen all three!
