Re: Jobs
Damn, Johnny. When I evidently suck so much at being concise, you come along and write my exact thoughts in simple and straight-forward language. I've said it before on here, and I'll say it again: America is NOT a meritocracy and I say that as a capitalist.songsmith wrote: don't think I don't support capitalism, I do... I just don't subscribe to the laughable conclusion that capitalism is a perfect system, or that the mega-wealthy deserve to be mega-wealthy because they are better or smarter or work harder.--->JMS
To Lisa, I admit I was arrogant in my original post. However, for the past three years, three-quarters of your posts on this website have been you saying about how hard you have it as a business owner, blaming everything from poor worker morale to labor laws to apathetic crowds. I do not deny that the restaurant biz is a tough gig. However, I just got rubbed the wrong way for the last time with the "Oh whoa is me, owning my own business is so hard and unfair" thing. You're on a forum full of musicians, who also have a pretty hard road to hoe. I don't have anything personal against you, but perhaps you need to think about how, not only constant complaining, but constant attribution to everything under the sun can grind on people's nerves.

What I don't quite understand is if the restaurant business is hard, which I'm sure it is these days, get out of it. Heck, you got a full time job at PSU so I'm sure you're making a good living with a great benefit package, why have all the extra stress and headaches,etc.. owning a business when you could do the 40 hours at PSU and call it a week. Not trying to be an asshole or anything I'm just putting my 2 cents out there(that I got from my Unemployment Compensation that I've worked hard for over the years

Actually, I have enjoyed having my husband own this business. We've met a lot of great people and have had a lot of great times.
The only reason I really come here any more is to learn from you guys and let you learn from me. Many of you have never owned a bar. There are only a few of you. You think that you know it all based on your experiences and your professions. You do know a lot. But you don't know it all. Neither do we yet. I thought I was trying to explain to you what a small business owner has to go through. Owning a bar/restaurant is one of the most difficult businesses. With each license, comes a new set of rules and regulations. Everyone, including me at one time, walks into a bar and thinks, "gee, if I had this place I would..." and it would all be better than before. Been there. Done that. It isn't all that easy. If you don't want a bar owner's point of view, fine. Don't read it. Buy your own bar. Get the experience of life that we've had. But remember, it is the small bar owners that provide bands an opportunity to play. It is the rules, regulations, the general public, and the work force that will keep the bar open. It isn't the band that will make or break it. Learn what really goes on in the industry.
Business has been good for us lately. In a time that has found bars and restaurants closing, we are maintaining and even seeing an increase in traffic. Maybe I don't tell you what we are doing right and what is working for us. Maybe I should. But the discussion was not on that topic. The topic was issues involving unemployment. And I was simply pointing out to the members of this board that the unemployment rate is a false predictor because anyone can file a claim. This does not mean that the claim will be approved if the company chooses to appeal.
Do you want a discussion on promotions that work? Heck, I could tell you a lot of neat things that we are doing. But this board tends to want to talk politics more than it does the business that brings us all here.

if running a business was easy we'd all be self employed. If we all complained about how hard being a working musician is we would just be preaching to the choir. Someone once told me I could find sympathy in the dictionary somewhere between shit and syphillus. There is a giant fucking recession going on. Anyone who is gainfully employed and has their health should not be whining.

I hate
Brian I hate whining! I can hardly wait til the winter is over and the outdoor shows start, EVK is gonna kick some ass thisyear! My 10 year old Stevie sits ans plays guitar for two or three hours a day! He is really getting good!
The economy is what it is. I have not seen a whole lot of change, really seems like the recession started in Blair County about the same time the started road work on 22 from Blair to Pittsburgh. 1972.

Dave that's awesome. You should be very proud of your kids. Your daughter is a natural too. She has no problem grabbing the crowds attention and keeping them entertained. That's what its all about.
