City Lights Go Out

Post by Jim Price »

It marks the end of another era in State College. The town's last remaining independent record store, City Lights, is closing its doors at month's end. Here's an article from Penn State's Daily Collegian about the closure:

Here's a letter to the editor from Tuesday's Collegian, coming to grips with the closure:

Needless to say, disappointing, but given the times, inevitable.

I was in City Lights on Friday and browsed the shelves for one last time. Greg was doing a brisk business, lots of folks in there checking out what was left, with discounts on all CD's and DVD's. I ended up buying Anvil's new album, a sound effects disc and a Lifer CD single.

I noticed a few local and regional CD's still in the shelves, including Electric Blue's CD (new and still sealed), a Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band CD and a few more.

Upon checking out, I told Greg it would probably take me half a year before I finally stop going down those steps trying to deliver magazines there. I've been delivering Pennsylvania Musician there since I started doing it in 1987.

Saturday is the last day City Lights is open, in case anybody wants to browse the shelves one last time.
