Catch any concerts this summer?

Post by felix'apprentice »

Just curious as to what everyone checked out this summer (if anything).

This year was the first time i went to an actual concert - and i got hooked. heres the bands i caught

Shinedown
Breaking Benjamin
Nickelback
Halestorm
Adelitas Way
Anberlin
Shamans Harvest
Violent Soho
Coheed and Cambria
Airbourne
Three Days Grace
Rise Against
Papa Roach
Sick Puppies
Godsmack
Puddle of Mudd
Theory of a Deadman
Seether
Five Finger Death Punch
Apocalyptica

My favorites were :

Shinedown - i absolutely love all of their music, and can't seem to get enough of them.

Image

Halestorm - they were absolutely amazing, front row, about 10 feet from them kickin major ass! Not to mention meeting them after wards - coolest people ever.

Image

Adelitas Way - not a hugely known band, but they had a massive crowd at ROTR, they played with so much energy it was insane! I picked up their cd right afterwards - and i wasn't disappointed.

Image

Coheed & Cambria - was the most insane pit ever, and i even managed to break my camera . but they smoked! However - i was very disappointed that they came on late - and only managed to pull out four songs. but i did get to meet and greet afterwards so that was pretty cool.

Those are the four that stick out the most, it was definitely an awesome experience. Especially because most of the bands i was very very close to the stage. I loved it!

Just thought i'd share. anyone else?

- kayla.

I went to my first "Real" outside concert this year. I had seen John Mellencamp (with my mom who loves him) at the BJC in 07; and Skid Row and Quiet Riot when they were at the clearfield county fair a few years ago before the lead singer of QR passed away. But this summer I saw Iron Maiden in Pittsburgh, and I have to say it was the best time of my life :) And hell even dream theater (who i don't really enjoy listening to studio wise) was awesome live...yeah, definitely best time pf my life :)

I saw Corrosion of Conformity at the Pour House in Raleigh. I don't get out much these days.

This year, I've seen the following shows

HIM (I found them rather boring live, especially since I never was a big fan, but I went with reasons of thanks to see them), We Are The Fallen (not bad, though technically a revamped Evanescence), Dommin (GREAT band, Greaser style with a lot of twists, quite entertaining) and Drive A opening (decent for a pop-punk band, they were pretty entertaining)

Mayhem Fest, which has too many bands to list. All the ones I got to see were HIGHLY entertaining, with exception to KoRn, who I've seen before, and find kinda bland live. I used to love their music, but I don't like how paper cutout they seem live. However, I'll give them their kudos, as their show has really improved since I last saw em

I've got my ticket for the Zombie/Cooper show. As I said before, this show is going to be amazing, and highly theatrical, and even though that takes a slight bit from the music, that's really a very under-used part of the live aspect that most bands tend to not use

I personally find it entertaining when a band makes full use of being live. One of the things I don't understand is how some bands (KoRn was mentioned earlier) just don't do much live. A drum solo here, a guitar solo there,... Hell, if you talk with your audiences and do something entertaining, it makes you that much more marketable, at least in my eyes. To me, you're seeing some bands live (which in this case is well worth, IMHO), and on top of that, it's like going to see a show at a modern-day theater! Live music plus the theater aspect for a price of a live show just means that much more fun and entertainment in my eyes

My favorite live act I caught this year was at the Flood Festival in Johnstown...someone whom I had never heard of...a guitarist named Anders Osborn. Unbelievable!

Took the wife and kids to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Burgettstown. The kids' first big concert. His band sounded amazing, and the very awesome Drive By Truckers opened up. Good night for sure.

Lesse here...

Amon Amarth/Tyr/Holy Grail-
They all killed it...great show all around

Gwar/Dirge Within/Mobile Death Camp
MDC was OK. Dirge Within was...absolutely amazing. I was a bit disappointed with Gwar though

Iron Maiden/Dream Theater
GREAT show. You could almost tell Dream Theater was holding back a bit, but it's great to know I saw one of the last Dream Theater shows around (until Mike undoubtedly comes back) Iron Maiden...let's just say there's a reason they've been around so wrong.

ZZ Top
Honestly I was a bit disappointed. They played tight and everything, but like Naga said about bands who don't take full advantage of being live, they were just...boring. I might as well have sat in front of a stereo system it was that weak. I'm glad I went I'm just saying

Mayhem Fest
A lot of bands. 3 Inches of Blood and Shadows Fall KILLED their stages. The only part of the side stages I regret is missing Atreyu and Hatebreed...shouldn't have pussed out to get hydrated. Rob Zombie stole the show on the main stage for sure though. Randy from Lamb of God was great but it almost sounded like the rest of the band was playing somewhat sloppy. Either way, great time.

Absolutely! Live personality is a huge thing to me! At the HIM show, their frontman Ville Valo was rather boring. He told jokes and was funny, and being caught in the moment, I had a good time, but even then, I'm watching the show and like "Damn, he should move around a bit". KoRn's showing on Mayhem Fest wasn't nearly as plastic. They're doing a lot better than they once did, although they still don't seem to catch me much live

And personally DBD, I missed all the way up to Shadows Fall, then I missed half of Atreyu's set, and all of Norma Jean's set. For Atreyu's set, the guys I was with had to go on a pee break. I didn't have to, but I figured it couldn't hurt. Glad I did, cos by the time it was my turn in line, I did have to! Meanwhile, with Norma Jean, it was your aforementioned "need a drink" bit. Kinda glad I did too. After getting my drink, Five Finger Death Punch was starting to play, so I grabbed one of my comrades and we went to find spots while he txted and called to grab the others' attention

Yeah I hear ya. It was pretty unbearable that day...even a cheap ass like me shelled out over $20 just in drinks (of course that didn't take much). Either way, I'm glad I caught the mainstage bands even if it was at the expense of some of the better sidestages ones
