Blues harp... Help?

Post by Banned »

Trying to learn the blues on a harmonica. I love how Ozzy does it on The Wizard. I'm having a hell of a time bending on every hole except the lowest. Any info/tips/advice anyone can give me?

Can you whistle? Can you whistle while inhaling? Change the pitch of that inhaled whistle. That's exactly how you bend a draw note. On holes 7-10, you can't bend draw notes, only blow notes.

Well... Actually I can't whistle at all, maybe I could while inhaling. But I will try that. Thank you.

When I first learned about bending, I learned how to do it by mouthing "e" then "oh" and I got it, but only for the first hole. I have trouble with the other ones, I think mainly cuz I can't draw just a single note. Not sure. Maybe you have an idea?

That's an embouchure problem, how you're positioning the harp in your mouth. Try pushing the harp back a little further in your mouth. You should be making the "o" with the soft-tissue part inside your lips, not with the lips themselves. It's MUCH easier to play for a longer period of time that way, and just pursing your lips tightly hurts, and sounds like crap. It also uses more air.
The harp should be almost touching your teeth, but not quite. It's weird to get used to, but trust me, it's how most pro's play.
I learned all that stuff from a book called, "Harmonica For The Musically Hopeless," by Jon Gindick, and I still recommend anything he ever wrote.--->JMS
