I miss MTV. I remember being at my friend Doug's house for the debut (his family had money, so they had cable TV) and watching in awe as the opening graphics played. Then, "Video Killed The Radio Star" and it was over for me, I was hooked. I think his parents were really sick of me being there every day just to watch some MTV.

I miss Headbanger's Ball and 120 Minutes. I find music videos on YouTube all the time from new bands. They must be making some sort of coin off of Vevo. Otherwise, I can't imagine their record companies spending money on music videos when MTV only plays videos for two hours at 2:30 in the morning. I guess there's always MTV2.

Does VH1 play a lot of videos? I haven't watched that channel in years.

They do, Paul, but in blocks that are categorized by genre and year. They have an all 80's block, they have a 90's portion, they do a "metal" portion (read: hair metal) and it's all very mainstream. No cutting edge stuff, but it's good for a decent nostalgia trip. But once you watch VH1 vids for a day, you can take a month off and come back and know exactly what they are going to play. But, they also run "Storytellers" which is highly enjoyable.

VH1 Classic has "That Metal Show" and "ROCKFEST".... That's as good as it gets for me...IMO

MTV was fun while it lasted...the music videos, at least.

MTV was a major part of my turning 21 years old. I was living in a fraternity house in State College at the time (Oct. 1981), and my 21st birthday was on a Sunday, when most of the bars were closed. And poor college student at the time, I didn't have much money to spend in a bar anyway. So several fraternity brothers and I tied one on downstairs in the frat house's bar area, finishing off the keg from the party the night before, and watching early MTV music videos all night. (As I recall, I didn't have any early Monday classes that semester.) We were seeing all the early video classics; the Buggles, Adam Ant, Elvis Costello, Blondie, Pretenders, a lot of new wave stuff. We would either be into the song or laughing at the video for each one.

MTV had only been on the air for two months at that time, so it was all a big novelty at that point.
