I think dude's chisel broke, and he was on the way to the hardware store and their entire race was destroyed by a freak accident. Seems just as likely as anything else.

Oh and a question: Do you think Asia will see the end of the world before us? You know, them crazy time zones and all....

The Mayans also missed out on metallurgy, and the wheel. They were still stone-age, except for astronomy and some math.
I'm not super-worried. :D

If one were to make a calendar that goes on forever, it would be pretty big huh???

End of a cycle, and another begins. Thats all. Its even a cycle that they made up. So there is no real cycle of anything. They just made shit up like every ancient people to explain things. They know much less than we know today. The Mayans were not real scientists.

Also, the Mayans had many beliefs, stories and legends. Why dont we believe or acknowledge any of the other crap they said or did? Well, because most of it is pretty farfetched like everything else from the ancient world. People just love false doomsday scenarios, so this one thing was grabbed on to.

Finally, the days have been messed up with daylight savings time, leap years, and whatever else. 12-12-2012 wouldve already passed. We are still alive.
Just my thoughts on it. One must realize though, that im not a mayan or a scientist, so what I say is no authority.

From what I've heard there were several different Mayan calendars all ending on different days of different years...so why is this one so special? I think Keith hit the nail on the head about people being overly obsessed about doomsday or the apocalypse or what-have-you. For example,
my dad has been predicting the end of the world regularly since 1996, and he's not nearly as crazy as some people I've met.

BUNK, I say!

I think it's as bogus as the Y2K scare. Not like you can do much about it anyway. I'd be more concerned with the zombie apocalypse. That's where the real horrors begin!! :D

Doubted either way, but we'll see in about 8 months and 3 weeks what will happen. I remember hearing about some guy not long ago predicting the end of the world, and there were billboards all over Altoona showing this prophecy of his. I happened to see them that day, and laugh at it, realizing that the day was almost over, and laughed further when the day had come to an end and I was still being my smart-assed self. What was really sad was that there were a lot of people that followed those dates, and they did give up EVERYTHING they had, sold it all, burned it all, etc. WTF? Did they really have that heavy a belief in another flesh-and-blood person who had no idea what they were talking about?

It reminds me of the whole cultist thing. The people who propose all these crazy ideas and mix the kool-aid are nuts, and it's the people that listen to him and drink it that you have to watch out for. Amazing how much charisma some people have in this world,... But moreso how people can just follow along!

A 15 minute video of craziness to sell a book. What a whack job.

I tried to leave the page and a pop up asked me if I really wanted to leave. Then a chat box came up. I told them I wouldn't buy jack from that moron, as he is trying to profit off of peoples fears. It replied with: "Great! Click here to get started". What a scam site that is.

Honestly, the end of the world stuff doesn't faze me. Nor does the end of civilization, etc. Think about it. You could die tomorrow from any number of random things--fall down the steps, choke on some grub, get shot by your girlfriend/boyfriend, etc. In those scenarios, you'd likely be dying alone, and, let's face it, we will all go at some point. At least if the world ends we will have some company when we go.

Dying sucks no matter what. Who really cares how it happens as long as it's not super painful.
