Bassists, Unite!

I have been wanting to do this for a while, but I never had the testicular fortitude to make a formal proposal so here it is. I would really love to have bassist get-togethers over this summer, just to share licks, riffs, technique, theory, and other such junk. Details can be worked out later. I just wanted to see if anyone thought it was a good idea and who would be willing to come out and participate or spectate.

I DO NOT want this to be a show-off session where everyone sits there playing the fastest crap they can and nothing gets accomplished. I want it to be a learning experience and a chance to meet the faces behind the names of RP.

What do you fellow dwellers of the low end think? (Of course, any guitarists, drummers, etc. would be more than welcome if we get a big enough place.)

Hell yeah, sounds like a good idea to me. Being rather new to playing bass, I'd be into learning a few things from some of you veterans.

I'm in. And by the way, there's a reason drums were among the first to be replaced by a little black box. Kidding, without a drummer, we'd have no shows(he does the booking).

Does anyone have any idea of a place we could get like a gymnasium, or pavilion, or something? I guess before we look for a place, we should get an idea of how many would attend. Would it be best to do this on a Saturday morning, Monday nite, or any other time or day??? I'm just throwing ideas up in the air here. Any suggestions as to what each person should bring or how to go about setting this up? I'm lookin for suggestions here people!!!

Guys,

Saint Francis University has a great open art building called the Boilerhouse...I'd be glad to check into getting access to it. What do you guys think?

By the way...for the bass players...what's the dumbest thing someone has ever asked you/said to you about your instrument? I wish I had a new set of strings for every time someone asked me "is bass easier because you only have four strings?"

Even though I'm primarily a finger-style player, I find it funny that people look down on a player if he or she uses a pick.

That's like saying a double bassist shouldn't use a bow and pizzicato is the only legitimate technique to use.

By all accounts and definitions, we should be plucking with our thumbs (ala Brian Wilson). That's why Leo Fender put finger rests on the bottom of the first Precisions.

"What's a bass???"

Not to be a sexist pig, but girls typically ask that question. Instead of trying to explain what it really is and what its purpose is in a band, I just say something like:

"Its like a guitar but its longer, heavier, has more thump, and can rock your world thrice as nice, baby."

Ok, I've never actually said that, but I would really like to!

I'm new to Rockpage, but not new to the bass. I would love to attend. Find a venue and let's get some topics for discussion so everyone's not milling about aimlessly. How about ways to combat a loud, overzealous guitarist. Also, how do you politely tell your rented soundman for the evening that people need to hear your notes, not just feel the low end.

That's why I started! I do feel there is a difference in attitude and playing when a person starts out on bass as opposed to a guitar player who plays bass. What I mean is that the guitar players I know and have heard play bass play the bass with a guitar-like feel. Sure they hit the notes and all, but the "mentality" isn't there. I read in one of the publications that bass is more of an "attitude" type of instrument and I tend to agree. I think the same could be translated to the guitar. You should hear me play one of those. It's hysterical.
