A lead singers best song as far as vocal power ??

Anything Glenn Danzig or Mike Ness does.
It's raw and real not polished. Most people either love that sound or hate it. Personally that high pitched Halford-esque stuff gets on my nerves.

Robert Plant can wail with the best of them...listen to Black Dog or Immigrant Song.....

Sebastian Bach is a helluva singer as well....the guy's got pipes

DIO is the biggest voice from a little man....his voice is ten feet tall, and he's a midget....

Ye, Cornell does have a good set of pipes on him ... The lead singer for shinedown is really good as well.

It's not operatic, but I always loved David Bowie's vocals on "China Girl". From a whisper to a roar and all points in between. Quite a perfect little SRV solo, too.

He isn't a technically correct singer, but Bono could really belt it out back in the day. "Bad" is a nice example.

Cornell has a voice that could knock buildings down. For some reason, he doesn't really keep my attention, though. There's a certain monotony to his style or something. Which is a shame, because his lyrics are worth paying attention to.

Call me crazy, but I've always liked the female vocal on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". That's some heavy duty stuff.

I have to agree with Chris Cornell as a choice. I saw Soungarden on their last tour and they opened with "Jesus Christ Pose". Cornell nailed it (no pun intended).

Speaking of Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf was one powerful singer. Check out "For Crying Out Loud". Awesome stuff.

Ian Gillan on Highway Star is another good one.

Ugh... how could I have forgotten this one? Phil Anselmo on Pantera's Cemetery Gates... too bad he's so roached out now - he could f'in wail! I'm Broken, Revolution Is My Name, and their unbelievable cover of Sabbath's Hole in the Sky rank WAY up there, too........

Since the Pantera/Phil/Black Sabbath thing came up I'd like to mention that they do a really great job of covering "Planet Caravan" too. It's not a technically difficult song, but it has to have a certain feel for it to be right. Phil and the boys do a great job of preserving the original's feel while still adding their own thing.

I think a great wordless vocal performance is a virtually unknown British singer named Clare Torry (sp?) on Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd.
Not sure how technically accomplished he was, but I think Jim Morrison had a great voice.
I have to be in the mood for her, but Tori Amos has a good voice.

As great an overall musician Zappa was, I think some of his vocalizations may be uncopyable. Listen to "Zombie Wolf", the range is awsome.

Anyone ever heard of a singer/songwriter named Andy Pratt. He made a few albums in the 70's that are great. In one song he can go form the softest whisper to screaming madman. he even does the chipmonks on one song.
