B.Y.O.B. Restaurants in Philadelphia Area - Why Not Here?
B.Y.O.B. Restaurants in Philadelphia Area - Why Not Here?
Okay, everybody.
After viewing all of the recent threads lately, I thought I would chime in with an idea that has been expanding in the city of Philadelphia and surrounding PA counties and southern New Jersey as something that might be feasible in west central Pennsylvania as well.
There are currently over 200 B.Y.O.B. restaurants in the city of Philadelphia alone.
Now, if a restaurant does not serve any alcohol, that means they would not require a PLCB license nor fall under the ridiculous PLCB rules and regulations. I am sure there are other rules to follow regarding liability issues, etc. but the concept is one to consider and becoming extremely popular. There are other variations as in restaurants that serve wine but can permit outside wine to be brought in.
"In classic Philadelphia tradition, these great restaurants encourage you to bring your own wine or beer. Like the cheesesteak, BYOB is just another way that Philly is unique. So bring your own bottle and let someone do the cooking at these participating BYOBs."
The restuarants make their money from serving food, selling drink mixers and other non-alcoholic beverages, selling ice, charging a cover charge or ticket fees for entertainment, corkage fees, etc.
A corkage fee is charged by a restaurant to patrons bringing their own wines to a meal. The corkage fee is usually minimal and is considered a convenience charge to the restaurant for opening and serving wines from outside their cellar.

Like that's a surprise.
Could be worse...could be like the Jack Daniel's distillery. The county that the distillery is in is dry...there are no bars and you can't even get a sample on the tour. The only loophole they found is if you sell a bottle as a "souvenir," you can get away with it. Now that's a kick in the teeth.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

When I go back to my undergraduate alma mater, my girlfriend and I go to a really cool Mexican place that is BYOB. If you have your own bottle of wine, it can be a very enjoyable experience. They don't have a cork charge. It's actually a pretty nice arrangement if you can deal with the slight inconvenience of having to bring your own bottle, especially considering that most places charge you at least $3.50 for a small glass of wine.
Oh yeah, the new DUI law sucks. I'm all for keeping drunks off the road, but there becomes a point when things go from protecting the public to being flat out facist.

There are several places in State College where you can bring your own booze. Some have a corking charge. It's not illegal.
From what I've been told, "bottling" is buying booze from out of state to avoid the high PA cost and taxes, then pouring it into bottles with the pa tax sticker on it.

... and then the wheel fell off.
