So many, so hard to choose, but one that always comes to mind is Duane Allman's solo in "Hot Lanta". It it very short, but wow, just rips your head off.

I could not find a You tube vid of Duane playing it, but this guy does a great cover, his first solo is Duane's and the second solo is Dickey's, from the Live at the Filmore album version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07KwAYT6u4

A very unknown song by Carlos Santans, "Oneness", had a very moving solo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG7waJZlazU About the 1:55 mark the sweetness starts.

"Buck's Boogie" by Bucky Dharma of BOC , love it every time I heard it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFRZxyh0vDU

But then again, the best solo I ever heard changes every time I go and see Felix play.

Edward Van Halen-Eruption. That solo completely changed the way rock guitar was played.

Always wrote very interesting music. The whole band was underrated.
Now I have a question. A lot of people on RP use the word solo to describe what I've always referred to as a lead. Isn't a solo when a musician (whatever the instrument) is playing by himself?

At the 2:22 mark, man should not be able to physically play like that. Mr. Toy Caldwell, of the Marshall Tucker Band, RIP,

One that comes to mind is Gary's guitar solo on REO's You Get What You Play For.

- James Labrie's 'Slightly Out of Reach' from his Elements of Persuasion album.

Guitarist: Marco Sfogli

(about 3:00 in)

- DT's 'Take the Time' from Images & Words.

Both just incredibly tasteful, yet darn near impossible! (Although, Petrucci takes that live solo on Take the Time a bit further than the album!)

- Also throw in the list nearly anything from Andy Timmons.

- Lastly, Nightwish copy of Gary Moore's 'Over the Hills and Far Away'.

Have to add Roy Buchanan. Man could shape a note like no other, never used a pedal. Tele into a Fender amp. All the tones came from his fingers. RIP Roy.

I am a huge Petrucci fan, so I also have to go with a solo of his from Images & Words, but mine is from Under a Glass Moon:

Holy crap! I forgot about that solo! I&W is not only the best DT album, but just one of the best all out albums ever created! (my opinion only)

Good call on that one. And Another Day has a VERY powerful solo as well. Just tasty!

Agreed! Another Day was a very touching song & video, just wish they would have actually released it to MTV.

I have hundreds I can think of from many great guitarists. So I'll pick one from my childhood (1968) that still blows me away.

When I went looking for it to show you I had to listen to it three times. It still gives me goose bumps !

Guitarist Louie Shelton on the single "Vallerie" released by the Monkees.

Please take time to listen to the whole song and see if it blows you away too.

just click play

I've seen Davy Jones twice and the Monkees (yeah, it's a nostalgia thing and Cathy likes them too) and I have never heard their guitarist cover it. They either skip it of do two measures and fade out.

My current favorite is the leadwork throughout Sultans of swing by Dire Straits, maybe not the most technical but very soulful and the finger picking technique and guitar sound just make it all click.

There are lots & lots & lots and a few were mentioned already, but I always liked the Michael Schenker solo in the studio version of "On With The Action" from the album "No Heavy Petting".

Its not as fast or technical as some other solos, but I love the way it slowly draws you in and then keeps building up. And then there's that whole Flying V tone thing. The main solo is past the midway point:

I have lots too, many already mentioned. I have to give props to the acoustic lead in Maggie May by Rod Stewart. Ron Wood from the stones plays the poerfect lead to that song in my opinion. Every note is just right....

I really like the solo to the album version of "Comfortable Numb. I also think that the solo to Cinderella's "Don't know what you've got til it's gone" is very good.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.
