Mike Portnoy goes crawling back to Dream Theater!

Post by KeithReynolds »

BUT THEY SAID NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA!!!!!

As predicted, after avenged sevenfold tells him to leave, he went crawling back to Dream Theater.
Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer & No one can take that away from him.... but he seems quite the egomaniac though. He needs to just take a break from being in a band and come back to earth a bit.
Maybe one day He will rejoin Dream Theater, but I think the other members want to make sure he's learned his lesson.

I think he needs to keep his mouth shut. I can see a reality show in his future?

The circumstances that had him leaving the band kinda sucked. The guy just wanted a break, which I thought would've done a world of good for their music. The last few albums just start to sound too similar after a while.

And there's no doubt he did so much more for DT than just beat the drums. However, the way this situation played out is pretty darn funny, and it makes MP seem like a whiny baby who didn't get his way.

I just thought that my favorite band was immune to foolish drama like this. It turns out they're human after all- incredibly talented humans, but they also have egos, grudges, and soap opera tendencies apparently!

I think it's funny that it wasn't DT that said no, it was their lawyers!!!

I've been a Dream Theater fan for almost twenty years, and I think Portnoy is one of the best drummers walking the Earth right now...which makes it all the more painful for me to say that the more I learn about him the less I like him.

True story: Many years ago, I believe it was during the Six Degrees tour, my ex and I decided to splurge and we bought two platinum tickets for a show costing $500 so we could have a meet 'n' greet with the band. The platinum package included some other stuff as well but the meet 'n' greet was all I really cared about. We were waiting in the room the venue had set aside for the greet and I heard the photographer coming up the stairs with the band and got excited as hell to finally meet my idols, and as they approached the top of the steps I heard Mike Portnoy say, "Let's do this gay thing."

Needless to say, I was pissed off. "Gay" thing?? We paid $500 just for privilege of meeting them for fifteen minutes and to him that's a "gay" thing? I was so irritated that I didn't even talk to any of the band members. I shook hands with James LaBrie but that was it.

I understand that touring can be exhausting and after a show you just want to take off and relax, but they agreed to do this. If anyone in the band felt it was too much of a pain in the ass then they shouldn't have done it, and these weren't just casual fans. These people shelled out a respectable amount of money for this. Nothing is more disheartening than hearing one of your musical idols refer to meeting you as a "gay" thing.

And now this Dream Theater/Avenged Sevenfold business...I admire Portnoy a lot and I never thought I'd say this, but I'm starting to think he's a bit of an asshole.

As for what Avenged Sevenfold said about Portnoy, I think that was just them being nice. Portnoy is one of the best drummers in the world. I find it hard to believe they don't want him in the band for the reasons they gave. The article said Portnoy had given interviews where he implied he'd be playing with them beyond 2010, so obviously they didn't tell him from the start that him being in the band was a temporary thing. It wouldn't surprise me if they got sick of his attitude and decided he wasn't worth it. And that is a damn shame.
