Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the May 11 edition of “The Homegrown Rocker,” which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!
After several weeks of guests on the program, it was time to revisit the mailboxes and check out what new local and regional recordings had arrived in recent weeks! As always, this means we aired a lot of new music! We debuted new songs from Dr. Nyce, Radio 45 (updating their song "Feels Like Summer" with current frontman Gary Bickerstaff now on vocals), Ken Werner, Woodland Twang, Coltt Winter Lepley, Inside Out, Yigga Digga, With Hopes Of Falling and Owned By A**holes. Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug out a 2006 song from local rockers Kyx for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and stepped “Across State Lines” to feature music from Tampa, Florida-based progressive metal trio Reverya. (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94’s website, www.q94classicrock.com. In Local Music News…
A new summertime event for area singer-songwriters is launching later this month at Juniata Brewing Company in Huntingdon. Organized and emceed by Huntingdon area singer and songwriter John Tkach, the event “Singer-Songwriter in the Round” will feature three different performers once a month, with the debut of the series happening on May 23 at 7 p.m. Performing that night will be Derek Heidel, Devin Sherman and Dylan Miller. The musicians will each introduce two or three of their musical influences and play a song by each influence, and then follow with three original songs they have written. Each performer will rotate songs between them. The following event in the series happens on June 20, and will feature Chris Strait, Kevin Quinn and Brother Jack. Events will also take place in July and August.
The musical lineup has been announced for this year's Delaney Chevrolet Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival, which will take place in downtown Indiana on Saturday, August 24. The blues headliner for the day will be Carolyn Wonderland, who has appeared on Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage, and alongside Bonnie Raitt in the film “The Road To Austin”; she also found herself swapping songs with Townes Van Zandt at age 16. The festival's jazz headliner will be Pittsburgh's Roger Humphries, who has toured with Ray Charles. The festival opens at 11 a.m. With performances by student groups Lenape Elementary Jazz, River Hawks Jazz and Marion Center High School. Following them will be the Westsylvania All Stars featuring Dr. Jamie Moore, jazz singer Ellie Martin, jazz pianist Tom Roberts, Pittsburgh bluesman Jimmy Adler and the headliners. Admission to the festival is free.
Another popular downtown Indiana festival, the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, will be scaling their event back for at least this year. According to the festival's vice president and treasurer Judith Ann Holliday, the festival was impacted in January by the passings of volunteer BethAnn Krug and festival Founder and primary benefactor, Dr. Jim Dougherty. A portion of the festival will take place on September 5 and 6, and will include a juried art show, the annual fiddle/mandolin/banjo/guitar contest, the Storytellers & Liars contest, and the Walk of Fame ceremony, which will honor Jim and BethAnn. Other Folk Festival events, including live music performances on Philadelphia Street, Children’s Alley, and the arts, crafts, food and beverage vendors will be suspended until further decisions are made regarding the festival's future.
And a brand new rock and reggae festival will debut in Westmoreland County next month. The inaugural Valley Vibes Music Festival will take place on Sunday, June 8 at Watershed Farm in Ligonier. Performing will be the groups Lopaka Rootz, Ras Prophet, 4String Fighter & Friends, Wizdom Worldbeats Reggae and (last week's “Homegrown Rocker” guests) MSJR. There will also be artists and live artist demos, food and beverage trucks. Proceeds will benefit the Loyalhanna Watershed Association and the Food2Go4Kids Program. Advance tickets can be purchased through the website www.wanderingspiritspa.com.
