Flying V projects

Post by metalchurch »

Here's a lefthanded Jackson Rhoads that I've been working on:

Image

This started life out as a KVX10 King V, which I cut the wing down to look like a Rhoads. I wish that I had one to trace the shape from, but I had to eye ball it from an old Jackson catalog.
It came out looking damn close.

I filled in the old control routing, and relocated the controls. Also filled in the neck pickup with a block of wood.
Not sure on what bridge I'm going with yet.
Currently it has an Original non fine tuner floyd, with the trem block removed and it's screw directly to the top of the body, but that's definitely coming off.

I'm thinking about Black with White bevels and a Jackson neck w/ a Maple board and black sharkfins like on the new Dinky DK2M's
** Here's some other option's that I am considering**
- Orange w/ a Black Bengal finish
- Black w/ Pink Bevels

My other V project was originally an all original '83 Kramer Flying V.
I am relocating the controls, and the jack. The neck pickup is also getting filled in.
I am thinking about painting it Black like Robbin Crosby's Jackson V.
**Other options**
- Black w/ White Polka Dots (but probably not)
- Bright Red with a White '67 Gibson V pickguard to look like K.K. Downing's V

I'll post pictures of the Kramer V when I get some time.

can't wait to see your finished work joe. I can tell your skills are coming along, and you're trying some more stuff than you would have a year or two ago.

Tell me about it!! Right now I'm working on my front porch, and I have to drag an extension cord along w/ all of my tools out there.
And of course through out my endeavor I end up going back into the house for more tools or parts, or a reference photo.
Before it's all over I have just about everything outside. A good chunk of time is spent doing that as opposed to just walking in cranking up some Sabbath or BadDaze and going to work.

Also if I had an actual shop I would be buying more tools like a fret press, and also put in a spray booth etc..

Thanks for the compliments guys it means alot!
I'd love to see anyone's projects if they have one or even ideas for a project.

P.S. Backlash, if you still want me to paint that Bass let me know.

Well I found a weird color that I am partial to, it is called Blue Hyancinth, kind of like a plum color at different angles.

Here's what I have done so far:
-Filled neck pickup cavity
-Filled control cavity
-Re-located control
-Drilled for 1 volume and 9v battery
-EMG '81
-Added a 1994 Jackson KV Pro neck (of course, hahaha)
-Primered, blocksanded and wet sanded.
-1 coat of color, just to see what it will look like.

I may keep this color, cause it's different.
It's so hard to photograph, it almost looks like grey primer, but I assure you it's not.
Image

I have to sand the headstock and put another logo on it so it's not upside down.
But it's coming along pretty good, I should have it done real soon, cause I have all of the parts already, just mainly body work.

Didn't reall like that Blue color, atleast not on a V anyway, so I changed it up again..

I'm almost done with the old Kramer V, still need to clear it and assemble.

I like the camo paint much better than the blue. Good job, Joe.

I did this free hand. I painted it black as a base color, then grey and then white.
I wanted to do a 4 color camo, but I got lazy. (Black,Dark Grey, Light Grey, and White)

It's not cleared yet, and I'm not sure if I want to do a satin clear or a gloss.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Here's the progress that I made on the Rhoads project. I have the neck pickup filled, and also I started filling the cavity cover, and relocating the output jack.

Here's a comparison with Reggie, my black Jackson.

I'm going to fit this with a Kahler Pro trem I think. I wanted to put a Kahler 7300 flatmount non trem, but I am leaning toward a trem.
Also this body had a 24 fret neck, and I think that I'm going to put a 22 fret on it, since it needs the trem placed anyway.

I work on this a little at a time, but I'd like to drop everything else and focus on this more. I cant wait to get it done.

This afternoon I got out the dremel and routed it for the Kahler.
Lookin pretty good so far, I'm hoping to get all of the body work and primer/paint done before it gets too cold out.

I'm glad to see that bridge actually being used.
At least I think it is the same one.
Logo finally came today.
Looks good.

Gotta take care of some christ bullshit shoppingand
then I can finally order all the parts. 65$ more and
the shit will be done. That Vibra triple humbucker
les paul knockoff will be done most likely on Monday.
Only gonna run me about 20$ including strings.
I'll post some pics of it and of the Zombiecaster's
progress.

Cheers!

Is that what your headstock logo says? "Zombiecaster"? Cool, what font style did you use?
I just wanted to say thanks again for hooking me up with that Kahler! After I disassemble and rebuild it, I think it will be ok and have a lot of life left in it. I'm definitely gonna put it to good use.

I'm unsure if I want to use this BC Rich neck that's on it, or get a Jackson neck?
I'm also undecided on whether or not to run a Reverse or regular headstock on it.
Then the color/graphic is the final thing on the board really.
I'm thinkin probably Black with White along the edges (bevels)
sort of like this:
Image

I really like that one. It's an '08 Jackson RR24M, but I reversed the photo, so I could get a better idea.
I'd like to get a DK2M neck, but it would end up being a reverse headstock, cause they dont make them in a lefty version.
What do you think of that idea?

It just says "Zombie" but we call it the zombiecaster.
The reverse head stock thing would be weird for me
but you'd be the one to make that decision. Backwards
for me may be good for you.

It's lookin pretty good so far. Did you have to drill the body out much to get the neck plate screws to fit in it properly?

You should clear over the logo and wet sand/repeat until the logo 'disappears' into the clear and looks factory.

I might clear over it. I have the time until I buy the parts.
I put new holes in the body to line up with the neck.
The plate covers over the old ones so I'm good to go.

This morning I finally had some time to work on the Rhoads a little bit.
I had to make the route a tad wider on the Kahler for my string spacing, so I got that done, but I snapped off a screw that mounts the Kahler onto the body. I drilled that out and used a longer screw and that one snapped as well. I gave up on that and just used the other 3 for now.

I pretty much just put it together as is without doing any more body work to it. I found another Bill Lawrence XL500 and threw that in it, and I hard mounted it to the body, cause I wanted a stripped down look to it.

Anyway, it's all together for now, and I'm really happy with how it feels and plays. It balances really nice, which was a concern of mine because of the body being non symmetrical and stuff.

This Black one is posted for a comparison. I think this is what I'm gonna make mine look like.

It is a BCRich "Exclusive" neck which had 3 tuners per side. I cut the headstock and re glued it back together and then drilled it for 6 inline tuners and cut it to have a Jackson headstock shape.
It turned out really well, but the frets are a medium jumbo shape and they re too small for my liking.

I'm only using this neck for now until I get another neck for it. I'm looking for a Jackson DK2M neck with the Maple fretboard like Moondoggy's father's Jackson has.
Either that or I might just go with a Jackson neck that has binding and a rosewood board and sharkfins.

But of course that could change if I find something really cool.

Thanks for your interest
