Need some help to fig out which program to use

Post by Killjingle »

My gf's uncle wants to convert 3 albums and some old tapes to disc. Hes computer literate; but I dont know how much.

I want to burn something (the exe files) to disc to give to him for xmas along with some other computer stuff I bought him but I dont know which one to give him. Everything I have or use is too sophisticated for him for what he hopes to accomplish. His PC is on the fritz, so I can envision him doing this on the MAC laptop he owns. I cant see him buying a soundcard or a waves program to eliminate the vinyl pops; if u catch my drift. Soundforge or Wavelab since they are not free arent possibilities, and Im not buying them for him to make 6 cd's. He wants to do these himself, or I would have done them already.

parameters:

must be free
easy to use
available for mac (laptop) and pc (sorry I dont know which platforms but lets assume XP and the equivalent on the mac)
nothing cracked or illegal

Audacity? I dont like that program; but Ive never used a Mac. I actually have an extra cubase LE I could give him but if hes running a mac he might have a tough time setting up the drivers since Cubase LE doesnt really have good support.....

please make suggestions

The albums will require a phono preamp. If you have a receiver (or home stereo preamp) with line level outputs, that will work.

good point...

however; his record player... it has a preamp maybe? I know there was something that he said that his record player had that the old ones didnt....

he actually bought this player with the hopes of digitally cataloguing a few albums

He might have meant it has a USB port? I know that the newer turn tables almost all have this feature.

Google the program "AUDACITY" It's free and easy to use. If you want to convert the imports to mp3 you also have to download a program called "lame" mp3 encoder that works with Audacity. (I think the download for that is also on the Audacity website). Hope this helps!
