Drummer Dynamics - Does your drummer play too loud ?

Post by Hawk »

This a topic on a drummers forum. The thread is by a guy we call coach. He studied with the likes of Jeff Hamilton among others.

http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showt ... p?t=221279

A click on the link will take you right to his thread topic post. A good read for both drummers and non drummers.

His point is to consider dynamics (volume) on each of the drums or cymbals. Sometimes just backing off on an open hi hat volume while still pounding a solid snare drum back beat will make the band think you aren't playing as loud.

He also considers what drums and what tunings counteract the instruments (which might be perceived as the drummer being loud) as opposed to drums and tunings that enhance the instruments.

Check out the link whether you are a drummer of if you play in a band with a drummer. The guy makes some good points. You don't have to read the whole thread, but it covers a bit more if you have time.

I always said I have dynamics - loud...and louder. But in the band I'm in now, I need to consider my control of dynamics more than ever.

Drummers - What techniques do you use to control dynamics ?

Anyone else - What do you think of a drummers dynamics and it's importance to a live show ?

One of the most important things for a drummer to learn, yet over-looked for god knows why.

Jason, the drummer in Vent, is probably one of the most dynamic-aware players I've had the pleasure to be in a band with. To the point that you can hear everything he is doing and it seems effortless no matter what the conditions. Its always just right. Never too loud.

Even though the PLCB has evidence otherwise....

Of course drummers play too loud, they all do. But then again so do all bass players, singers, and keyboardists too...Geez.

Good points Bill. I put a video on youtube a couple weeks ago on this very topic. Dynamics are very important. They are overlooked by a lot of people, but can really be the difference between a good band and a great band.

Went electronic. Can still play dynamically without being over powering.
